#35 – Daily Scrum

According to the Scrum Guide, “the purpose of the Daily Scrum is to inspect progress toward the Sprint Goal and adapt the Sprint Backlog as necessary, adjusting the upcoming planned work.”. Therefore, to get the full value out of the Daily timeboxed for 15 minutes, the team must, of course, have created a Sprint Goal at the Sprint Planning. What this daily meeting is definitely not for is for each Developer to report on how many hours they’ve spent on their work and how much is left.

The Daily Scrum is typically a good place to spot whether the team is actually working as a team with their collective focus on the Sprint Goal. Ideally, everything that everyone says should be relatable everyone in the team, and if not, the Scrum Master must drive identifying what anti-patterns are present and what is causing them (e.g., sub-teams within the team caused by personal interest or competencies split). Just remember to not do this at the Daily Scrum, itself, as the timebox must be respected in order to keep the session short and relevant.
